What expats and dual citizens should know

  • Accounts and property in more than one country are easy to miss — and an executor cannot deal with what they do not know exists.
  • Record each account and property with its institution, branch address and currency (USD or CAD).
  • Use the notes to say which assets are abroad and who to contact locally.
  • Name a contact person for each foreign institution.
  • After your death, whoever has your will must deposit it with the clerk of the circuit court for the county where your estate has venue within 10 days after learning of your death. Florida law does not provide a general lifetime court-deposit procedure for ordinary wills. Source: Fla. Stat. § 732.901.
