What is an advance directive?
An advance directive is a written statement of the medical care you would want, and would not want, if you became unable to communicate your decisions.
Is an advance directive the same as a living will?
In most places they mean the same thing. Some jurisdictions use “health care directive” or “personal directive”. We generate the form appropriate to your jurisdiction.
Do I need a Power of Attorney as well?
They do different jobs. A directive records your wishes; a personal-care Power of Attorney appoints someone to make decisions. Most people benefit from having both.
Does it replace my will?
No. An advance directive applies while you are alive. Your will governs your estate after death. They are separate documents and you should have both.
