Online Wills and the Competition

Historically, the only alternative to hiring a lawyer to get your will done was buy a “will kit”, which you could find at certain office supply stores or in some books stores. These were crude products with very little customization, which understandably didn’t garner very much trust.

Predictably, as we’ve matured into the internet age, various online “do it yourself” will creation sites have arisen, both in the U.S. and Canada. Sites like Epilogue Wills  and Wilful in Canada, or U.S. Legal Wills and Trust & Will in the U.S. now offer a digital version of the old will kit approach. Many of the big players like Quicken, LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer also offer a digital will kit as part of their large product offerings. Some sites like FreeWill even claim to create your will for free.

While these other sites certainly look great and seem to have all the bells & whistles, the products they produce – that is, the last will & testament or power of attorney which your loved ones will be relying on when you’re no longer there – leave much to be desired. Strip away the fancy landing pages and expensively produced questionnaires, and you’re left with a final result that’s just about as crude as those old fashioned will kits.

From our market research, we’ve seen that the competition are just taking your data and plugging it into a basic template. The resulting will is simplistic, only has the illusion of customization and is missing a lot of the critical language you’d get if you had your will done with a lawyer. We started Succession Wills because we knew we could do better. We set out to make an online will creator that truly replicates the end product you get when you hire a lawyer to do your estate planning, but without the price tag.

Don’t roll the dice with your family’s future by relying on a basic will template created by a site that focused all of their energy on their website itself and what it looks like. Choose Succession Wills for a truly comprehensive will that is actually customized to suit your needs.
